IHSAN Responds to Haiti Relief Effort
Thanks to generous donations from IHSAN individual members in the weeks following the devestating January 2010 earthquake, we raised enough money to support our partner Global Volunteer Network Foundation’s (GVNF) teams on the ground in Haiti. GVNF identified an orphanage in Jacmel, approximately three hours from Port-a-Prince, which had not received any international support and the number of children had doubled to over 200 after the earthquake. IHSAN’s funds allowed GVNF to expand the orphanage and build a community center. IHSAN’s donations helped with the construction, water and sanitation needs, as well as allowed for schooling to be conducted onsite so the orphans – those from before the earthquake and after – continue to get the education they deserve. The community center is located between two camps and provides a focal point for the community to meet, spend time and learn. The community center was created with the following objectives:
- To provide training to the local community (e.g. English classes)
- To provide activities for the local children (e.g. art classes)
- To provide a safe place for the community to heal and a place they know they can turn to in times of need.
Thank you to our IHSAN members for their generous contributions! While millions of dollars in aid have poured into the country of Haiti, there are still small projects like the Jacmel orphanage and community center which would not have received any assistance if not for IHSAN and our project partner the Global Volunteer Network Foundation.

IHSAN-Los Angeles adopts a community in Kenya
In May 2008, IHSAN-Los Angeles members delivered funds they had raised through an IHSAN fundraiser to IHSAN Project Partner Malewa Trust. The funds will be used for water reservoirs and education programs at the Kimbo School in Gilgil, Kenya - a rural community two hours north of Nairobi. This project will help hundreds of families by building a much needed water source for a school of over 250 children - almost 80 of whom are displaced children. Young schoolgirls will now be able to attend school because they will no longer have to walk everyday miles down the mountain, to the river, and back up again with 10 gallons of water strapped to their foreheads! Their families will have access to water, locally displaced women are provided much needed employment, the children will learn about water and environmental education, and newly planted gardens will survive - allowing sustainability for the community.
